We began the evening with the excellent Chenin Blanc from South Africa, and I am very pleased to say that this was your favourite white of the three you tasted. It made a respectable 27.5 out of 50.

The other two scores were; for the Bolfan Reisling 24.5 and the Esk Valley Verdelho 11.5. (Something has definitely gone wrong somewhere along the line with regards to the Esk Valley as after discussing the results with James our contact at the supplier, we have been advised that this wine is highly respected around the world and is regarded as one of the best examples of this area of New Zealand. This can be backed up by the Silver medal they hold from the Hawkes Bay A&P Mercedes Benz Wine Awards 2010 (NZ).) This only highlights how wine can one day be a star and on another be a failure…

Moving on to the reds we started with the Merlot from the Strawberry Hill Winery in Gloucestershire and on the result of your scores find that it is the lowest scored red with 23.5 out of 50.

The next we tasted was the highest scoring red. It was the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and on this result shows the valley lives up to its name ‘the land of plenty’ and why Cab is the most famous and widely grown red varietal in the world. Its score was a respectable 33 out of 50.

The final wine we tasted was the Polo Amateur Bonarda from the ever influential Argentina and the second favourite red of the night. It scored 26 out of 50.

The two winning wines and links to our suppliers page for them will be posted on our twitter feeds. But not only that they will be entered into our Wine League which already has two entrants from November’s event. You will be kept informed as the league grows and we will advise you when the Final to find the best of the White and the best of the Red will be held later next year.

After checking through the tasting note sheets and matching your answers to the wine makers tasting notes, it was a bit hit and miss, but that is to be expected as it takes a long time for anyone to be able to pinpoint exactly what a wine is expressing in both the nose and on the palate. This is why we should all give ourselves the best chance to experience the journey by tasting correctly and more enthusiastically instead of just chucking it down our necks. However there is one person who did stand out and was able to use the aroma wheel to good effect as well as read what their taste buds were telling them, and that was Denise Willman.

The final tasting game of the evening was a blind tasting and well done to four of you who guessed correctly that the ‘Wine or not a wine, that is the “?”’ was Port! They were Justine Lawson, Karen Riddle, Max Burgess (who were near each other so great ‘teamwork’ ladies and gent) and our much loved regulars, Chris Da Silva and his lovely wife Mary.

The 2nd blind tasting proved to be more difficult, the only person to guess correctly the nationality of the “French, Spanish, Italian or English? sparkling was Mark Curtis with a correct guess of ‘Italian’ (all those trips to Italy have paid off Mark!)

There are no prizes for these tasting games, however you can now sleep tonight rest assured that you have a little more knowledge than the others.

The competition winner of The Louis Roederer Champagne and two glass gift set was;

And here she is looking very pleased with her winnings alongside our very own Julia Searle of WINEntwine looking more pleased than usual to be relinquishing a bottle of Champagne.

WINEntwine concluded last Thursday with excellent experiences of the 8 wines carefully chosen for the 1^st time by our new Business Development Manager Daniel and the expertise of our contact James at our new supplier. Their challenge was to present wines that gave us examples of ‘The indigenous grapes, the countries they come from and the wine they create!’ And didn’t they do well!

(With our new supplier in place we can now confidently state that the wines we choose are not available in the local or national multiples. This means we will always be able to bring you quality wine you will only find with the specialists.)

The 4 elegant whites ranged from the exquisite Spanish Albarino to the heavenly rich Austrian Gruner Weltliner.

The 4 beautifully crafted reds ranged from the exceptional French Beaujolais to the interesting Australian Shiraz.

The two clear winners of these wines from the night were as follows:

In the White category the vote went to the heavenly rich Weingut Stadt Krems 2010 vintage created from Gruner Weltliner grapes grown on vines in Loess soil in the Krems area of Austria.

And in the Red category the vote went to the unmentioned above supple Pomares Quinta Nova 2008 vintage created from three of Portugal’s famous Port grapes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. And believe or not this wine is the entry level from this vine yard. So imagine what the best ones must be like.  All the grapes in this blend are grown in the dominated Port producing area of the Douro Valley in soils which have high granite content but are well drained.

Moving on to our guest;

We were very much spoilt for quality as we also had the pleasure of experiencing two more wines of indigenous grape varieties because our very own Daniel who is the Director of Selected Italian Imports Limited in his spare time, presented a white called Il Lugana and a red called Cap del Priù made by the Pasini family of Azienda Agricola San Giovanni based in Valtènesi of Northern Italy. Both wines are contained in some very traditional looking bottles and are perfect examples of the wines of the area. Elegant, rich and very well made. These wines will only be available to businesses and not the final consumer. So very unfortunate news for them, however as we are all business people we get the chance to purchase direct. You can follow the journey of these wines and other produce from this area in the UK through Selected Italian Imports Limited on twitter @selecteditalian and on their wordpress blog selecteditalian.wordpress.com.

Although the evening went well we were unable to find a winner for the Louis Roederer Champagne with 2 glasses gift set and an executive decision was made not to auction the second off.

Because of this, we will be doing a lottery move and calling a ‘rollover’. One of them will again be available to the Designated Driver who turns up with at least 1 Networker who Tastes Wine. So contact our sales team to book you and a guest a place at our next event to have a chance to win. The second… we will keep you posted on its developments.

Now for the important part of the Newsletter. Thank you to the Networkers for attending and congratulations to them for a successful Networking evening.
